310 Exceptional travelling communion set by Charles and George Fox 1849

Price £ 1950

310. Antique silver travelling communion set hallmarked for London 1849 with the makers marks of the renowned Charles Thomas Fox and George Fox . The overall height is 5.25 inches, the base diameter is 3.1 inches . The weight is 298 grams, 9.58 troy ounces. The set is in the stylised form of a continental lidded jug . From its condition , I doubt if this has ever been used . The whole seems absolutely pristine , with no signs of wear or usage at all . It is a most superlative piece of craftmanship and design.

My site only allows a few images , so do ask to see all those available as this set has a remarkable design. The base is formed by the inverted paten , which also serves as a holder for the chalice. Both fit snugly up inside the body of the set. Up inside the body , you can see a male dome , the outside of the wine bottle, over which the chalice connects. The paten base is an excellent push fit up into the body . The wine bottle is in the upper part .The screw top surmounted by a cross finial allows access for the wine to be poured in , whilst the spout has a decorative screw end which allows the wine to be poured out. All removable pieces are hallmarked except for the pouring spout end , which must therefore be treated as being made of white metal. The whole is in exceptionally good condition. Take care separating the base, the paten and the body as these are purely a pull / push fit , which allows access to the chalice. The chalice can easily fall if you handle the separation roughly.   The paten , chalice and main body all bear  IHS , the Greek shortening of the word Jesus.  The whole is an amazing tour de force of design and workmanship. Enjoy !
