315 ANTIQUE 1909 SILVER GILT CUP AND COVER ROYAL ARTILLERY GOLD CUP OF 1947

Price £ 1850

This excellent antique silver gilt/gold washed cup and cover ticks many boxes: made by Garrard , Royal Artillery , Household Brigade , Lord Mildmay, horse racing , silver gilt , antique .... what more you could ask for ? The hallmarks are for London 1909 , the maker Garrard and Company , holders of a Royal Warrant from 1843. The overall height is 8.5 inches, the diameters , base, 3.75 inches, cup top 5.6 inches , handle width 9.1 inches.  The weight is 1021 grams , 32.8 troy ounces. Inscribed to both sides and the cover, one side of the cup relating to the running of the Artillery Gold Cup at Sandown in 1947 and the other side relating to the Household Brigade Cup, no date or venue recorded. Why two different races ? Both were ridden, and won ,by Lord Mildmay ! , so presumably he took this trophy from his home stock and had it inscribed to celebrate. Both were trained by Peter Cazalet , who had 32 winners ridden by Lord Mildmay . An ideal trophy cup for a racing museum. Excellent condition.
